A mystical hymn/Aramaic piyyut (Jewish liturgical poem) with text by 16th century poet Israel ben Moses Najara (1550–ca.1628). This melody, here performed by Ensemble Shaharit, is quite similar to the one sung and played by Lev Koszegi (transcribed elsewhere on this site). In this recording, the refrain “Yah ribon olam” is sung in unison by the group of musicians, while each verse is sung as a solo by the ney (flute) player. This ney player also plays the melody on the ney with the voices during some of the refrains. The other instruments playing the melody alongside the voices include a violin, an oud and a kanun. Sung verses and refrains alternate with instrumental solos, such as the extensive violin solo where the violinist improvises on the melody from 3:30-5:00. A pitched handframe drum (what appears to be a tar) accompanies the voices and melody, while the inclusion of a double bass alternating between a bass line and joining in to embelish the melody adds additional melodic and harmonic interest.
